Faith, history, hope and healing.
I loved this book! Carolyn Cochran does an outstanding job of providing biblical history for each of the windows she has named. In each chapter Cochran has juxtaposed a modern day true story of women who have lost their husbands, young and old. What makes this book so current and real is that Cochran has woven the loss of her beloved husband throughout its pages, ending with the last story from her daughter, Nicole. This is a book about faith grief and healing. I highly recommend it. It is one I will share with friends.

Excellent source of hope for those hurting!
“Widows in the Bible” is a well thought out examination of the lives, struggles and triumphs of widows in the Bible. Carolyn makes each of their stories applicable and personal to each of us allowing us to take the steps needed for healing. Putting one foot in front of the other is exhausting in grief and this writing helps us to make step by step efforts to move forward in a loving and supportive way. Excellent encouragement for widows or anyone struggling with depression or loss of hope. God bless you Carolyn and little Max!

recently widowed
My husband passed Nov 26, 2024 less than a month after his 55 birthday after fighting a rare brain cancer for six months. I have been on leave from work since his diagnosis in May (the day before Mother’s Day) and supposed to return January 13th.I am currently on a 7 night cruise as I read this book and write this review. I too went to the Bible looking up every place widow was mentioned. Thank you for putting this book together the way you did and sharing your testimony. This helped pull me out of the black hole I was heading down this evening.A lot of people have called me brave for taking a cruise solo (first cruise ever) 5 weeks after David’s calling home to the Lord. I don’t feel brave, I just needed a change in scenery and warm sunshine. I’ve been out every day being social and thanking the Lord for this blessing and opportunity, but here I am night 6 grieving deeply holed up inside my interior cabin most of the afternoon and evening, room service for dinner while reading your book start to finish, taking notes. I think I needed to spend the evening with the Lord tonight, reading His word and replenishing my soul.I am praying for discernment and courage to hear and obey my calling. I know it is in ministry as well and April 2025 will be my first mission trip to Kenya. It’s a start!God bless you and your family!

While I am not a widow, I liked the way this book was set up, and think it could be helpful for navigating through the various problems that come up after losing a spouse. There are several chapters where the author has paired a true story of a modern-day widow with a story of a widow from the Bible, looking at some specific aspect of widowhood. For example, there was a chapter dealing with finances, and another one dealing with the problem of living far from any relations who could help out. Each chapter has a short discussion/reflection section afterwards with prompts on what you might be able to do in that situation. And, of course, the comforting repetition that God continues to care for widows and orphans just as He did in scripture times. My only nitpick is that we don’t find out what happened to the modern-day widows in the end. I would love to hear the rest of their stories.
